I received some inquires from prospective customers who wanted a little more informtion on the Antique Japanese opium pipes. One inquirer was not sure whether Japanese Opium pipes really existed. He inquired  ”…am I missing something here? I am aware of Chinese Opium pipes but I didn’t know that Japanese Opium pipes do also exist?? and if they do, when did these pipes make their way into Japan?”

The answer to that question can best be summed up by quoting a brief excerpt from one of Judith Millers excellent books ANTIQUES Price Gide 2003 (page 189 plate SI). Here’s a direct quote from the guide about Japanese Opium pipes following the image:

Japanese Antique Silver Opium Pipe

” In the 15th Century, opium was introduced to japan from China where it was a popular painkiller. From the middle of the 17th C it was used recreationally in China where it was mixed with tobacco and smoked in pipes.” Given in the same section are illustration of some Meiji period three Japanese silver opium pipes.

So yes there are Japanese Antique Japanese opium pipes. You could always ‘google’ for more information. Good luck!

The ear bends are of white comfortable plastic material (probably).
